You Get to Choose Who You Will Become

Many people go through life without any real sense of purpose or direction. Flitting from one thing to the next, never stopping to think about what they want or where they are going.

It’s not that people intentionally waste their lives; it’s just that without a compelling future vision, people don’t know who they want to be or what they want to do with their lives.

And so, people flounder around, trying this and that, never really making progress. Without a compelling future vision, people never really mature into the valuable adults that they are capable of becoming.

Some people spend a lifetime playing around, obsessed with themselves, over-identifying with radical ideas, desperate for attention, and never really growing up or maturing. Hellen Keller once wrote:

“The only thing worse than being blind is having sight, but without a meaningful future vision” – Helen Keller.

Some people pledge their lives to business projects, earning money or building a name for themselves. Few people take the time to define a vision for who they can grow to become. Without a vision for who you can become in life, you risk remaining the same for a lifetime, stagnating, and being outgrown by the people you care about most.

Without having a vision for who you can become in life, you risk having your life dictated to by small people, small goals, ticking boxes and reaching the end of your daily ‘to-do’ lists. Life becomes one long series of tasks to be done.

While there’s nothing wrong with having small goals, it’s who you decide to become that will determine how other people remember you once you’re out of their company and the legacy you go on to leave with your life.

If you must identify in something, try identifying in virtue.
If you don’t know what this means, try figuring it out.
Your future might thank you for it!
