Your Tone of Your Voice is it’s own Language

Everything about your tone, manner, energy, and attitude shouts louder than your voice when you’re speaking. Your voice is weakened if your tone is friendly, but your sound is aggressive.

Your tone of voice says much about you. It’s like its own language, communicating your attitude, emotions and intentions. Whether you’re speaking to a friend or giving a presentation to a roomful of executives, it’s important to be aware of the tone you’re using and make sure it’s appropriate for the situation.

Use too much slang when talking to your grandparents, and you might come across as disrespectful. Swear words in a job interview? You might as well just leave now.

Tone is one of the most important aspects of communication, so it’s worth taking the time to master it. Many are oblivious to this. It’s possible to talk with profound sense and wisdom while allowing the sound that your mouth is making to undermine everything that you say.

Tone of voice is how the character of your business comes through in your words, both written and spoken. It’s not about what you say but rather the way you say it and its impression on everyone in your audience who reads or hears you. Think about the following principle.

Be more intentional about your sound than your sense.

The tone of your voice has a unique voice of its own. Many people are oblivious to the tone that their words are spoken in and therefore fail to understand why some of their communications and relationships fail miserably.

It’s wise to be intentional about your tone, listen back to yourself whenever possible and tune into the tone of your words. Then, ask yourself: “Does the tone of my voice accurately convey the same message that I’m speaking out?”

You may be speaking about ‘world peace’, ‘saving the animals’, or ‘how to save the world from extinction’ – and these things are undeniably GREAT topics to discuss.

However, if the people who listen to you hear a tone of agitation, self-righteousness, narrow-mindedness, or judgement, in that case, your audience might take you as seriously as the cause you claim to be so passionate about.

Answer these questions to get thinking about how THE TONE OF your words might sound to other PEOPLE:

  1. What’s the tone of your voice, and how might it sound to those who listen to you most?
  1. What are some situations where adjusting your tone might make a big difference?
  1. How do you adjust your tone for different people and different situations?

Every individual that you meet has a tone of voice and way of expressing themselves that’s as unique as their own fingerprints. Some people are pleasant and polite. Others are pushy and aggressive. Some people say way TOO much with only a handful of words.

It’s never about WHAT you say but rather the way you say it and the impression that what you say makes on everyone in your audience who either reads or hears you.
