Commit to Developing a Sensible Mind
It is not enough to journey our way through life with just a sound mind – the key is to use it effectively and competently. As Aristotle once said, “It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.”
Thinking critically involves us forming well-reasoned conclusions that are sensible, objective, perceptive, non-emotional and well-thought-out. Thinking is one of the most difficult activities that human beings can participate in – which might be one of the main reasons why so few people engage in it today.
Critical thinking is a mental state in which people don’t mindlessly accept every idea they’re exposed to. Rather, they adopt an attitude of hard inquiry towards every idea, regardless of how genuine it may seem.
Denying other people the opportunity to do our thinking for us and make our day-to-day decisions is one of the best ways to utilize our minds to their full potential. In doing so, we learn how to grow our minds in a healthy manner, gain a deeper understanding of our intuition and senses, and develop greater confidence throughout this process.
Thinking carefully, on the other hand, does not imply that we belittle, disagree with, or undermine anyone else’s viewpoints; it simply implies that we are more committed to our own standpoint evaluation.
Here are 6 Common Characteristics of Sensible Thinkers;
- A spirit of inquisitiveness regarding a full range of complex issues.
- A natural interest to mature and remain well-informed in truth.
- Alert and receptive to opportunities that demand pure objectivity.
- Authentic self-confidence in one’s abilities to reason.
- Open-mindedness concerning different or conflicting world views.
- Flexibility in considering alternative viewpoints and perspectives.
Some people, on the other hand, value their freedom to express an ideology or opinion without having to first think about it critically. The nature of the self-governing mind isn’t determined by what it believes; it’s defined by how it interprets our everyday experiences.
Mark Twain once said, “When you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to stop and reflect.” It’s beneficial to expand your minds and views since those who don’t will never know if someone is deceiving them or not.
Taking responsibility for oneself entails refusing to have other people do our thinking, talking, and labelling for us; it also implies learning to utilize our intellects and senses. In a nutshell, we must learn how to think critically.
In some cases, the word “critical” has a variety of meanings. For example, while ‘critical’ might imply something’s importance or be used to emphasise the negative qualities of someone, it can also signify criticism.
Critical thinking, on the other hand, does not imply merely criticising individuals, things, or ideas in a rebellious manner. It is more about questioning our daily events and experiences to learn from them and figure out what is most helpful for us rather than simply taking the ideas and notions we read or hear at face value.
The capacity to think analytically is a function of self-directed, self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-correcting reflection. It’s thinking in this way that prevents us from being unwittingly influenced by other people’s personal biases, inaccurate ideas, false claims, ludicrous notions and manipulative behaviours.
It is not enough to have a good mind. The main thing is to use it well. Being fully responsible for yourself involves refusing to have other people do your thinking, talking, and decision-making for you; it means learning to value and respond appropriately to your own intellect and common sense instincts and then make your own decisions accordingly.
Next time you’re in an environment where everyone’s thinking the same, then it’s highly likely some people in your company aren’t thinking too smartly at all. Commit to developing a sensible mind, and you’ll forever stand apart from the masses.
