Conciseness is the Key to Effective Communication
Effective communication involves understanding not only what we want to say but also how our words will be received by others. It requires us to be aware of the impact our words may have and to choose them carefully in order to achieve our desired effect.
In the world of communication, conciseness is key. When we communicate with others, we must be clear and concise to earn their trust and respect. By mastering the art of concise communication, we can create a better understanding between people.
To become an understandable and succinct communicator, we must be willing to sacrifice what is complex or confusing to make way for what makes sense.
Sometimes, rationally-minded individuals may have a hard time keeping things simple. They can easily slip into complexity in their explanation of things. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but understanding that can’t be easily transferred to another is irrelevant.
Our understanding can be measured by how simplistically we can communicate what we know to other people. That which we really understand, we won’t have a problem explaining. If we can’t communicate complex matters in a way that can be easily understood by a child, our knowledge might not yet have evolved into understanding.
When we are communicators, teachers, or presenters, our capacity to simplify our messages allows us to eliminate any superfluous noise so that our audiences, followers or students are not led astray by any unnecessary detail and instead given the key information (or understanding) that we would like to convey.
Conversational pauses are sometimes one of the most valuable communication skills we may utilize in our arsenal. While it may feel awkward to have a moment of silence in a conversation, it is important to resist the urge to fill quietness with irrelevant noise.
By allowing for pauses, we give ourselves time to gather our thoughts and choose our words more carefully. As a result, we can communicate what we know more concisely.
