Pattern Recognition is a Human Superpower
Human beings are creatures of comfort, and rare is the individual who enjoys change. Trends and patterns govern the world.
Marketers know this, as do entrepreneurs. You will also benefit from knowing this. Pattern recognition, in my view, is among the most valuable skills a person can possess.
Pattern recognition is a superpower because once you can spot a pattern, good or bad, you can then decide whether you reduce it, increase it, use it to your advantage, or use it to positively change the world in some way.
Repetitive behaviours are the autopilot default setting of most people’s lives. Undetected repetitive behaviours can become the blind spots that ‘pattern recognising’ people will use to influence, coerce, manipulate or sell their products and services to us.
The ability to clearly recognise patterns is a superpower that anyone can develop with practice. Whether you call it problem-solving or troubleshooting, pattern recognition is undoubtedly the key to success in doing anything well.
Pattern recognition is an ability of the mind to not only find patterns but figure out in a logical way what those patterns suggest about what will happen next. This is what allows us to anticipate what will happen in future events or situations. Interestingly enough, pattern recognition forms the basis for most research and scientific inquiry.
The ability to recognize patterns is beneficial in many different contexts. For example, identifying patterns in political decision-making can prepare you to plan your financial future. If a government wants to raise corporation tax, a business will be wise to find new ways to invest in growth. It’s not wise to amass cash only to be taxed more.
Another example could be patterns of human behaviour. Look to a person who feels depressed. Is depression a biological illness, or has it a cause? Is there a relationship between loneliness, vision-less-ness, boredom and depression? If so, what is it? Is there a pattern that you can identify between these things?
If you were to speak with fifty different depressed individuals who all experience loneliness, vision-less-ness or boredom in their life, it would be fair to suggest that depression is often caused by loneliness, vision-less-ness, or boredom. This is just a pattern that has been identified by looking at trends within people.
Investors look to the stock exchange to identify growth and crash patterns in stocks and shares. This is how people make wise decisions about how, when and where to invest their money.
Pattern recognition can help us to find relationships between things that we would not be able to see otherwise. It can also help us to predict future events and behaviours, which is why it is such a valuable tool for scientists. Even if you don’t realize it, you are probably already using pattern recognition all the time in your everyday life.
Next time you need to solve a problem, or understand why something happened, see if you can find a pattern or trend. Pause, watch patterns unfold, figure out why the pattern exists, and then act appropriately.
