Design the Life You Want to Live

American basketball player, Shaquille O’Neal once said, “For all my friends out there who like ‘quotes’, mark this one down. From today onwards I’d like to be known as ‘The Big Aristotle’ because Aristotle once said, ‘Excellence is not a singular act; it’s a lifestyle. We are what we repeatedly do.”

The most hopeless people I’ve met in life are those who don’t genuinely care about anything. Passion, joy and fulfilment go hand in hand with each other, and without them, any satisfaction we experience through our endeavours will only be short-lived and fleeting.
One of the major factors that hinder people from adequately progressing in life is that they’re not in alignment with their genuine passion (their one true north). We develop a passion for life as we develop the muscles of our body – by judicious, daily exercise.
To build a house that stands the test of time, we need a reliable set of plans for a life that are progressive, sustainable and clear in direction.

Life Is Too Short

A seasoned businessman once told me how crucial it is to be enthusiastic about life. He explained that if we are inspired to achieve something in life, regardless of what it is, work at it at full speed ahead until completion. Being lukewarm about anything in life is pointless and results in very little.
When we’re passionate about what we pursue in life, we continually operate on the ‘lookout’ for everything or anything that will help us become more proficient and competent at it.
It’s easy to become excellent in life when we discover a pursuit that absorbs us, liberates us, challenges us and gives our life a meaningful sense of significance, direction and passion.
A problem that many people have is that they commit the best of their time and energy to carry out work they aren’t enthusiastic about doing (and sometimes don’t even enjoy). This is undoubtedly a sombre approach to living the only life we’ll ever have.
When we wish to become successful in a particular field or endeavour, study, hard work, perseverance and patience are the essential qualities that will ‘get us there’. Life is way too short for us to bore ourselves with dead-end work of which we’re not even passionate.

“Aspire greatly; anything less than a commitment to excellence becomes an acceptance of mediocrity.”

– Brian Tracy
We must find something that we care about and have a deep passion for because to master anything in life we need to devote a lot of our lives to it. One person with serious passion is more valuable than an unlimited amount of people who are slightly interested in something.
Many people settle for an existence that’s significantly smaller than the one they are capable of living.
As one thing’s for sure, until we thoroughly commit to a course of action or acutely determined set of outcomes, we wouldn’t be wise to expect advancement or change to fall on our laps. Personal excellence is the gradual result of continuously striving to be better.
A life properly lived is a life by design. We don’t move forward in life by accident or as a result of remaining apathetic and comfortable. Some people like to be comfortable, and that’s okay. If you decide to give your life dimensions, objectives and a sense of mission, the results can be colossal.

Design a life for yourself, don’t just exist in one.
