How often do you step out of your comfort zone to try something new?
Most people never do. In a fast paced world, people lead such fast-paced lives, in which, it can often be difficult to establish a healthy life balance which allows for work, rest and play.
The mere idea of incorporating yet another element into our existing state of never-ending busyness can seem daunting, unrealistic and even completely unmanageable.
But what if venturing out of the comfort zone and into the unknown had a range of benefits that you hadn’t previously considered?
Past social studies suggest that abandoning our daily routine and partaking in activities that challenge us is a healthy exercise that can lead to heightened personal clarity, increased productivity, enhanced mental composure and greater personal success.
The comfort zone is just a lifestyle choice that people make, through which our actions and behaviours fit a fixed pattern that minimises the amount of risk we take on a daily basis. The comfort zone provides a place of mental security, little anxiety, minimal stress and even less fulfilment.
Stepping out of the comfort zone is good for you!
Even though the comfort zone allows us to feel safe and secure within ourselves, staying in this comfort zone limits how much progress and progression we will make throughout our full range of most crucial life areas.
Choosing the comfort zone will always come at the cost of the progress we make, our creative freedom and the excitement we experience – without which, people settle for bland and uninspiring lives.
The safe and secure life is also detrimental to our pursuits of attaining personal or professional success. If no-one ever stepped outside of the comfort zone ever again, nothing new would ever be invented, technology would cease to advance, science would cease to understand, and nothing about your life will ever change, ever!
Those who have ever launched a business changed the world in some way or initiated something new, know that when people push and challenge themselves, they can go on to accomplish breathtaking results – sometimes, even the miraculous!
In the last few years, if I hadn’t stepped out of my comfort zone to take risks, I wouldn’t have built a sustainable business. I also wouldn’t have thousands of people around the world taking my courses.
If I hadn’t stepped out of my comfort zone, I’d likely still be in a dead end job, exchanging my time for the least amount of money that an employer was willing to pay me. Unfortunately, this is how most people live.
Most people don’t like taking risks, but unfortunately, when people don’t take many risks in life, they generally won’t have too much excitement in their lives either.
Some risks pay off, and some risks don’t. Either, it is worth remembering that while some of the risks we take might not work out the way we want them too, there is no such thing as failure – only lessons to be learned.
When we adopt this mindset in life, that we cannot fail, we can only learn lessons, stepping out of the comfort zone and into the unknown can seem far more exciting and less intimidating.
In my course, Unshakable Confidence, I discuss how taking risks in life is part of the process towards growing and developing our confidence. We take risks, learn lessons, grow in competence, take more risks, and then grow in confidence. This is the natural order of personal growth.
Those who are afraid to take risks and step out of their comfort zone are often those who don’t have confidence in their ability to learn and solve problems. Breaking this pattern of thinking can only make people stronger and more confident to reach higher levels in their professional and personal lives.
Innovation happens the most when we step outside of our comfort zone. To create something new, or make a positive impact in the world in any way, it’s crucial that we learn new things, take more risks, make more mistakes, and learn the essential lessons along the way.
If you don’t make big mistakes, you won’t learn big lessons, and if you’re not learning big lessons, the value that other people find in you will always be small.
Embracing new learnings can help us to adapt to new life situations, to new challenges and will also help us to develop the degree of resilience that inspires others also to step outside of their comfort zones. Those who embrace change, learn lessons, grow in value and become increasingly receptive to change further until risk is no longer intimidating to them.
The comfort zone kills productivity. Without the sense of discomfort and unease that comes from conforming to other people’s expectations; most people do the bare minimum to ‘get by’ in both their personal and professional lives.
Those who push themselves to the limit, find that they can not only think more innovatively but also communicate with far greater boldness, confidence and ease. Being successful in the risks we take gives us the confidence to take more chances, to learn more lessons and grow in life experience. The ancient sages call this ‘wisdom’.
So, moving forward, may you take the risks you need to take, to pursue your goals and make an impact in the culture that you live. As you break new barriers, discover for yourself how it is possible to learn new skills and acquire new information from stepping out of the comfort zone and into the unknown.
And remember, take the time to reflect upon all of your experiences in life, good and bad, to understand how failure and success can contribute to your end goals. Step Out the Comfort Zone, Into Success!
